Sometimes there are moments in which the world seems to stop spinning.
It’s as if God is trying to get you to pay attention, because that second of life is so profound.
I had three of those moments last weekend.

ICOK: Old things, precious memories {Grove, OK}

As I drive, I survey the land. Always. It is almost as if I can’t look away from the roadside long enough to concentrate on the yellow lines in front of me.

But never fear, I have a good driving record. (Just don’t ask about pre-1999… not sure you can handle the truth.)

As I was traveling home from a family Fourth of July celebration in Grove, Okla., I saw this junktique shop along the highway. I even thought briefly about camping out until it opened on Monday morning.

I tried peering in the windows, but couldn’t get close enough. I wonder what treasures could be found in there? Then I noticed the treasure sitting outside.

As I was photographing the truck, I thought of all the memories it must have collected in its time. Shuttling families to church. Taking long trips into town to stock up on essentials. And, from what I learned, the vehicle became a fire engine at one point (notice the valves by the grill).

I couldn’t help but imagine all the teenagers who might have learned to drive in that pickup. Some may have had better luck than I did in my formative years, but we can only hope. I bet their daddies also promised to be patient, but at the first sound of grinding gears, shouted, “Whoa! You’re gonna ruin the transmission!”

It’s days like yesterday that remind me growing up isn’t all that bad. Bittersweet, yes. Thankfully, all around is a sprinkling of moments to remind me that things are still as they’ve always been.

The trucks nowadays just have electronic locks.
